Frequently Asked Questions

WHY THE NAME 3FU3L?

3FU3L is made up of 3 Macronutrients- Protein, Fat and Carb- to fuel your body for optimum performance and recovery.

HOW MANY SERVINGS OF 3FU3L SHOULD I TAKE PER DAY?

One serving (52g) per day is enough for most people. You can take it before or after your training or competition. For long endurance training we recommend one serving during each 90 minutes, mixed in 16oz of water, in addition to whatever amount of water you need to remain hydrated. We obviously recommend you testing out your fuel for during the training first, not at the event.

WHEN SHOULD I TAKE 3FU3L?

We recommend taking it prior to training if you’re only taking one serving per day. If you’re taking two, then you can split them before and after training, or have one during training as well. More on PreWorkout and IntraWorkout Fu3ling

IF I ONLY TAKE 3FU3L BEFORE A WORKOUT, DO I NEED A POST-WORKOUT DRINK TOO?

That’s what the protein companies would like you to believe! But the truth is that when you’re using intact protein (i.e. not simply branched chain amino acids or essential amino acids), it doesn’t matter if you take it before or after your workout.

The School of Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Birmingham performed a study where they measured amino acid balance and uptake in subjects who had consumed a whey protein shake either before or after a leg workout. The result? It didn’t matter whether they consumed the shake before or after training, there was no significant difference.

Most do not like taking their shakes before bc it sits heavy in their belly. 3FU3L protein is rapidly absorbed therefore can be easily taken before workout or competition. The Myth of the Postworkout “Recovery” Shake

IS 3FU3L GLUTEN FREE?

There is no gluten in any of our ingredients.

IS 3FU3L PALEO?

No supplement with Whey Protein in it is “Paleo” because milk and dairy are not part of the Paleo diet and lifestyle. As far as Whey Proteins go, our Grass Fed Whey Protein Hydrolysate is rBGH free and also the easiest protein on the market to digest. It’s analogous to the differences between a glass of milk and the hydrolyzed whey protein found in infant formula (or in 3FU3L!): fat and lactose are both removed to the extent that it no longer poses a allergenic threat (which is why whey hydro is used in hypoallergenic infant formula).

3FU3L’s carbohydrate is created from hdp Waxy Maize (corn). But, similar to the Whey Hydrolysate Protein, the hdp Waxy Maize is highly branched (the hdp process makes it even more so), so the end product leaves you with something that doesn’t resemble corn at all in its effects. So much, in fact, that by law we don’t even need to disclose the starting material, and instead could simply call the product hdp carbohydrate or RS4 carbohydrate, or something similar.

In the end, when you eat paleo, and don’t consume milk and corn, you’ll find nothing in 3F that has the family of effects you’re trying to avoid. Milk and grain are coal, 3F is diamond. You start with the same material, but the end result isn’t far from being a by-product of the starting material.

DO I NEED TO TAKE ANY OTHER SUPPLEMENTS WITH 3FU3L?

We recommend good fish oil and Vitamin D.

WHY IS THERE NO CREATINE IN 3FU3L?

Creatine is great stuff. If you like it and want it, you can get a year’s supply for $15 online. But for this product, and the needs we’ve designed it to serve, creatine wasn’t optimal: you’d need a loading dose of 20 grams per day for the first week (meaning you’d need to either take a whole bag of 3FU3L in one week) or you’d need to go out and buy creatine to add to it. Also, creatine is ideally consumed with a high glycemic index carbohydrate – which wasn’t in the cards for any product we’d put our names on.

Another consideration is that creatine will make you heavier; not a huge consideration for most people (as long as it’s muscle). But a concern for our MMA fighters and BJJ players, that often need to stay within their weight class. And we’d rather add Betaine to the product – which shows nice strength, power, and endurance gains, but without necessarily adding bodyweight. A higher strength to bodyweight ratio and greater lean tissue to fat, while improving endurance, is the sweet spot for 3FU3L. But again, creatine is cheap and effective, so by all means – shop for price and add it to your supplement routine.

WHY ARE THERE ONLY 20 GRAMS OF PROTEIN IN 3FU3L?

We’ve done a lot of research into this area over the past decade (or two) because all of 3FU3L’s formulators have been athletes for at least that long. Needless to say, we’ve seen protein fads come and go. But glossy magazine advertisements aside, the research – the actual data in published medical journals – hasn’t changed much.

Ten grams of protein (even whey protein) is no better for recovery than ten grams of carbohydrate according to a study out of Baylor University in 2011. While two years earlier, another study performed in 2009 at McMaster University examined muscle protein synthesis under post-exercise conditions, using doses of 5, 10, 20, and 40 grams of protein, and found that while the 5 and 10 gram doses provided the least recovery (muscle protein synthesis), 20 grams was sufficient to maximally stimulate recovery, with the excess protein over that amount being oxidized (yes, 20 grams of protein was actually equal to 40).

And finally, we have a study out of the University of Birmingham, published early in 2012, which confirmed that 20 grams of protein is just as good as 40, in terms of recovering from exercise induced damage.

So if you’re wondering why other products have 16 grams of protein or 28 grams of protein or whatever – we can’t tell you. We can only tell you why 3FU3L has 20 grams – and since we’ve provided links to our research on our blog, we invite you to check them out and see if you agree. On the other hand, if you still want 30-40 grams of whey protein in your diet, you can just take 1.5 or 2 servings of 3FU3L per day (and get the additional benefit of the Betaine, MCTs, and hdp Waxy Maize).

WHY IS THERE NO BETA ALANINE IN 3FU3L?

There’s a couple of good reasons we’ve left Beta Alanine out of our product. The first is that a recent meta-analysis has shown that ingesting an average minimum of 178 grams (over time) is necessary to see a 3% performance effect. And while we’ll take every percent we can get, that means we’d need to put 6 grams of Beta Alanine in each serving of 3FU3L (for you to feel it by the end of the first month). That same analysis showed that it has no effect on movements lasting less than 60 seconds – so it’s not as useful for power athletes as Betaine (which we’ve included because it boosts both power as well as endurance).

And if we thought that would improve performance, we’d have included it. But unfortunately we ran into another stumbling block, and that’s the amount of Beta Alanine that gets eliminated after drinking it in a liquid form. See, a study published in late 2011, while we were still formulating 3FU3L, showed that taking Beta Alanine in a time-released tablet was superior to drinking it.

So while we’re not saying that Beta Alanine isn’t good stuff, we’re just saying that it’s not ideal to drink it. If you’re interested in using Beta Alanine, find yourself a nice time-released tablet, and take between 50-80mgs per kg of bodyweight.

WHY IS THERE NO HMB IN 3FU3L?

Simply stated, HMB (beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyric acid) shows its most pronounced results with inexperienced trainees and the elderly. And even then, we’re talking about a product that is not only expensive, but also produces (*and we’re being generous here) very mild results.

WHY IS THERE ADDED VANILLA FLAVOR AND STEVIA IN 3FU3L?

The flavor and sweeteners found in 3Fu3l are all natural and minimal. There are no flavors in our product that you couldn’t pick right out of the natural world as-is.

Our high grade whey protein hydrolysate is very bitter (due to the hydrolyzation process). The higher the degree of hydrolyzation, the more bitter the protein becomes. The more bitter the protein, the more you need to rely on flavoring. So that is why we added a flavor package to make our product a bit more palatable while still adhering to our Clean Diet.

WHY IS THERE A CARBOHYDRATE IN YOUR FORMULA?

We tried other formulas with just Protein and Fat. But we kept bonking. After the doing some research and testing on ourselves, we found that the third macronutrient (Carbohydrate) was necessary to sustain energy. Then we came across 3CARB™ that actually is a low glycemic index carbohydrate that acts like a fiber and provides hours of energy- far more than any other carbohydrate. Study on Carbs + MCTs

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 3FU3L AND EVERYTHING ELSE ON THE MARKET?

3Fu3l is a clean recovery and performance product for those that are trying to stick to a healthier diet and/or are serious about their training. In general other products might taste a better because there is more sugar in it. But we are more concerned about keeping our Formula as clean as possible so it doesn’t mess with our Clean Diet.

We’ve invested in more pure, high quality ingredients because that’s what we wanted to take. Our Grass Fed Whey Protein Hydrolysate is the purest and highest grade protein you can get on the market. Many of our competitors use either a Grass Fed Whey Concentrate or Isolate or a Whey Hydrolysate. We sourced an organic non GMO coconut milk powder to put in our product rather than the cheaper MCT oil you find in a lot of other products as well.

3FU3L also is one of the only formulas to have all 3 macronutrients in one product with a slow burning carb and minimal sugar (1 g/serving). We are the first sports supplement to use the breakthrough formula 3CARB™ in our product.

And last but not least, there are really no other supplements on the market that can simultaneously help you fuel and recover. In order to get same benefit from 3FU3L, you would need to buy at least $120 worth of other products to match our one at $64.95
